The tango has been added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Paris-based organization said Wednesday. The decision was taken at a meeting in Abu Dhabi of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee. The list is intended to help preserve the variety of humanity's cultural expression.The tango was created at the end of the 19th century in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, as part of a style of music that originated among European immigrant populations living in those cities.The dance spread to Europe in the early years of the 20th century, and became a craze in capitals such as Paris and London.Today,there are many tango dance styles, including Argentine tango, Uruguayan tango and ballroom tango.
